Bakhmut Penal Institution (No. 6)
State Institution "Bakhmut Penal Institution (No. 6)" was part of the structure of the State Criminal-Executive Service of Ukraine and performed the functions of a penal institution and a pre-trial detention centre.
The institution is the legal successor to the Artemivsk Pre-trial Detention Centre and was located in the city of Bakhmut, Donetsk region.
For many years, the institution ensured the custody of persons taken into custody, as well as specific categories of convicts, in accordance with the requirements of Ukraine's criminal procedural and criminal-executive legislation.
Following the start of the full-scale armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine and active combat operations in the territory of the Donetsk region in 2022, the evacuation of convicts and persons taken into custody to other institutions of the State Criminal-Executive Service of Ukraine was carried out.
Evacuation measures were conducted to ensure the life and safety of the prisoners and the staff.
Subsequently, the city of Bakhmut suffered large-scale destruction as a result of combat operations and was occupied by Russian troops.
In this regard, Ukraine has lost actual control over the territory where the institution's property complex was located. Thus, State Institution "Bakhmut Penal Institution (No. 6)" belongs to those institutions of the State Criminal-Executive Service of Ukraine from which convicts and persons taken into custody were evacuated in 2022, and further information regarding the condition of the institution is unavailable due to the temporary occupation of the territory.
