25,000 people amnestied on the 20th anniversary of the Constitution of the Russian Federation
The amnesty resolution adopted by the State Duma of the Russian Federation primarily concerned the most socially vulnerable prisoners: women, minors, and first-time offenders sentenced to no more than five years for non-violent crimes.
‘Today, more than 25,000 convicts have already been amnestied. Mostly, these are citizens sentenced to suspended sentences.
However, some of them have been released from serving sentences in correctional facilities,’ RIA Novosti quotes Mariya Kannabikh, a member of the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation.
The amnesty resolution was adopted by the State Duma in December 2013 on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution of the Russian Federation.
This month sees the completion of the resolution’s implementation, ‘Novaya Gazeta’ reports.
