The chief of the correctional department in the Dnipropetrovsk region has been dismissed for the beating of prisoners

The head of the management department for the execution of sentences in the Dnipropetrovsk region, Anatoliy Babets, has been dismissed.

Such a decision was made on Thursday, “Svydomo” reports.

As is known, on 12 July, information appeared regarding the mass beating of prisoners in the Dnipropetrovsk colony No. 89.

“Babets initially denied the fact of the beating, and then said that it was a routine training exercise,” the report notes.

Later, he did not allow human rights defenders onto the territory of the colony.

The deputy head of the Management of the State Penitentiary Service of Ukraine in Kyiv and the Kyiv region, Ihor Andrushko, confirmed the information regarding the dismissal of the head.

He reported that the Prosecutor's Office should provide an assessment of the events at DKK No. 89.

In addition, there is a whole series of accumulated complaints in the colony: rising mortality and tuberculosis morbidity, poor interaction with public organizations and the press, etc.

At the moment, the position of the head of the management department for the execution of sentences in the Dnipropetrovsk region is being held by his deputy.

In the opinion of human rights defenders Ihor Harkavenko and Volodymyr Lesyk, it is necessary to initiate a criminal case regarding this fact and to bring the leadership of the Dnipropetrovsk department and the administration of colony No. 89 to justice.
