Correctional institutions produced commercial goods worth 55 million UAH.

At the enterprises of correctional institutions of the Kharkiv region, commercial goods worth 55.2 million UAH were manufactured in the first 9 months of this year—152.5% of last year’s level.

This was reported to a UNIAN correspondent by the assistant to the head of the administration of the State Department of Ukraine for the Execution of Sentences, Yuriy CHUMAK.

According to him, in general, for the 9 months of 2010, compared to the corresponding period of last year, the number of prisoners working in paid jobs increased by 54% (by 1,200 people) and today stands at 3,289 people (54.5% of able-bodied persons).

Y. CHUMAK noted that for the needs of the Kharkiv region, commercial goods worth 9.7 million UAH were manufactured at the enterprises of the region’s correctional institutions based on various orders, including metal products worth over 4 million UAH for the Municipal Enterprise ‘Zhylkomservice’.

Deputy Head of the Department for the Execution of Sentences Andriy LAPINSKYI emphasised that the new leadership of the regional Interior Ministry administration “has significantly intensified work on providing colony enterprises with new orders”.

Reference by UNIAN. Functioning on the territory of the Kharkiv region are a territorial administration, 11 criminal-executive institutions, the Kharkiv pre-trial detention centre, and the Kuryazhska educational colony, where, as of 10 October, 11,800 convicts and prisoners were held.
