Kirovohrad prisoners to create a poster that will influence the HIV epidemic
While the whole world marks the day of remembrance for those who have died from AIDS, the convicts of Kirovohrad Correctional Colony No. 6 have decided to stop the spread of the virus. By joining the all-Ukrainian “Stop the Countdown” campaign, HIV-infected prisoners will create an information poster that will call for specific measures to prevent viral infection.
For many years, on the third Sunday of May, millions of people around the world have commemorated those who have died from AIDS. For the third consecutive year, HIV-infected convicts at Kirovohrad Correctional Colony No. 6 are holding their own events to mark this date. This year was no exception. But this year, activists of the “Nadiya+” (Hope+) mutual support group for HIV-positive prisoners decided to create something that could actually influence the overcoming of the epidemic, something that would “speak” even after the day of remembrance had ended. They chose to create an “eloquent” poster containing a clear preventive message. To achieve this goal, regulations “On holding a poster contest among the convicts of Kirovohrad Correctional Colony No. 6” were developed at the beginning of May. The document provides for the terms, mechanisms, and criteria for the contest. Only convicts who create a poster with their own hands are eligible to participate. An expert committee, which included representatives of both non-governmental organizations and the prison administration, was created to determine the winner. Thanks to additionally raised resources, the best poster will be printed and distributed.
So, on 23 May, the winner will be determined during the event at Kirovohrad Colony No. 6.
