On 23 April at 11:00 in the press centre of the “Ukrainian News” agency, a press conference of the human rights organisation “Donetsk Memorial” will be held on the topic: “How prisoners’ rights were observed in 2008”.
The fourth annual report “Compliance with prisoners’ rights in Ukraine-2008” has been prepared. It contains an overview of events in the penal system in the past year, statistical data on its activities, an analysis of trends in the system’s development, numerous examples of human rights violations, and the reaction of the Department for the Execution of Sentences to reports of such cases.
The report was prepared by the public human rights organisation “Donetsk Memorial” within the framework of a project supported by the International Renaissance Foundation.
During the press conference, it will be possible to familiarise yourself with the main theses and conclusions of the annual report, as well as take part in the discussion of such issues:
Who in the country can protect the violated rights of prisoners?
Why does the Department for the Execution of Sentences not adhere to international human rights standards?
Why is there no public control of penal institutions in Ukraine?
During the press conference, Oleksandr Bukalov, head of the human rights organisation “Donetsk Memorial”, will speak, and the participation of representatives of human rights organisations, government institutions, and citizens whose relatives are in places of detention is also expected.
