Why is prison better than freedom?
The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted a law on another amnesty in December 2008. Prisoners usually look forward to an amnesty with impatience. And so — it happened. There is a chance to be released early to the much-desired freedom.
At the same time, there are reports that some convicts allegedly do not wish to be released. Can this happen? What reasons could prompt a person to refuse freedom?
Such reasons exist and are quite understandable.
Firstly, it is worth noting that an amnesty can be applied to any person only once. And if one of the convicts has two or three months left until the end of their sentence, then using the temptation to be released is not so advantageous. What if the person ends up behind bars again? The right to an amnesty might still come in handy in life. And a few extra months can be waited out, especially when it is winter outside.
Secondly, when adopting the Law on Amnesty, our deputies do not consider the time of year when convicts will be released. For those prisoners who have a family and a roof over their heads, this is not significant. But there is a certain proportion of convicts for whom no one is waiting on the outside. Sleeping and eating is a problem for them. It is clear that it is easier to solve these problems in the summer. So it is better to announce an amnesty in March-April. Then prisoners will be released at the beginning of summer. And they will have fewer problems than in January-February. And that is exactly what the last amnesty announced in December requires to be done. And one can understand a person who decides to spend the winter and spring months in the colony, where both a roof and food are provided, rather than going out into the cold unknown.
