Ukrainian prisoners are hostages of the helplessness of the department's leadership
Recently, a number of events have occurred in penal institutions, which some media outlets have called protest actions. Convicts declared self-mutilation, attempts to hunger strike. Experience in observing such events shows that each of them is individual. There are cases when false information is transmitted from behind bars; more often, reports about emergencies contain a certain share of truth. In any case, such reports must be thoroughly checked. At the same time, the public must be informed as quickly as possible through the media about what is known for sure about one case or another.
Instead, the Department's website in recent days does not contain a single report either about possible events in the institutions or any reaction to reports in the press about prisoner protests. Only once did the head of the department appear in the news and managed only to state that “it is needed by someone”. It is difficult to imagine a more helpless reaction from a head of a department. No explanations, no attempts to find out in each case what actually happened. The “non-existent” reaction of the department indicates that it will not be a big mistake to assume that the department's leadership does not possess information about the real situation in the “problematic institutions”, does not know what to do, and how to inform the public about emergencies.
It is with regret that one must state: those prisoners in Ukrainian prisons whose rights are violated are effectively hostages of the catastrophic incompetence of the department's leadership and the indifference of the state's higher leadership to the human rights situation in the penal institutions.
