The effectiveness of justice in Ukraine leaves much to be desired
In 2008, following European Court of Human Rights rulings, Ukraine paid out 20.5 million hryvnias to claimants in favour of the plaintiffs.
As reported by the UNIAN correspondent, this was announced by Ukraine's Minister of Justice Mykola Onishchuk at a press conference in Kyiv.
'Since 1997, when Ukraine ratified the European Convention on Human Rights, the European Court has issued approximately 500 rulings in which it found Ukraine to be a state violating human rights,' noted the Minister of Justice.
The Minister of Justice also noted that Ukraine ranks fourth among countries by the number of complaints from citizens submitted to the European Court of Human Rights. Throughout the history of appeals to this court, Ukrainians have filed approximately 8,500 such complaints.
Meanwhile, according to Onishchuk, the Russian Federation ranks first by this measure, Turkey ranks second, and Romania ranks third.
'Unfortunately, the Ukrainian judicial system is not in a condition to satisfy public interest regarding effective and fair justice,' concluded Onishchuk.
