St. Nicholas Day celebration at the Chernihiv Women’s Prison
19 December 2008 – on St. Nicholas Day – members of the charitable organisation ‘Chernihiv Women’s Human Rights Centre’, together with representatives of the Chernihiv City Supervisory Commission and People’s Deputy of Ukraine G. V. Mankovsky, held a charity event at the Children’s House of the Chernihiv Women’s Prison.
Conditions necessary for the normal life and development of children have been created in this Children’s House. Convicted women can communicate with their children in their free time without restrictions. If a mother of a child who has reached the age of three has less than one year of her sentence remaining, and she diligently performs her maternal duties, the child’s stay in the Children’s House may be extended by the prison administration until the mother’s release.
At present, the Children’s House is undergoing reconstruction to create conditions for children to live together with their mothers.
The convicts prepared a puppet show for the children and guests, and the children held a concert.
With funds collected by the charitable organisation’s representatives, as well as funds allocated by the city authorities and the People’s Deputy, biscuits, juices, sweets, and other necessary items were purchased for the little ones and handed over to the Children’s House. Every young resident of this childcare facility received a gift from those present.
