Education behind bars
In the penal institutions of the Kherson region, there are classrooms in both the pre-trial detention centre and three correctional colonies: the Bilozerka Correctional Colony No. 105, the Daryivka Correctional Colony No. 10, and the Northern Correctional Colony No. 90. Furthermore, computer classrooms have been equipped in two of these colonies: there are 5 computers in use at the Northern Correctional Colony No. 90, and 6 at the Daryivka Correctional Colony No. 10.
Among those under investigation and the convicted, 560 people do not currently have a completed secondary education, and 9 of them are unable to write at all.
The majority of the students are young (433 people under the age of 35), but there are also pensioners. 108 people have been enrolled in the graduating 11th (12th) grades, and 86 in the 8th (9th) grades.
Last year, 586 people studied in schools within the colonies and the pre-trial detention centre; three of them enrolled in and studied at the 'Ukraine' University through an external programme. By the end of the year, 90 students had received certificates, and 96 had successfully passed their exams (there were even straight-A students) and received diplomas of full secondary education.
Unfortunately, due to the fact that university entrance exams were cancelled this year and applicants are admitted based on external independent testing certificates, those convicts who wished to continue their education were unable to enter universities. Testing was not conducted in the colonies.
