Children’s Day in the women’s colony
Chernihiv Correctional Colony No. 44 is one of two correctional colonies in Ukraine where women sentenced to imprisonment serve their sentences, and where a Children’s Home has been created and functions, housing children up to three years of age. In this Children’s Home, conditions necessary for the normal life and development of the child have been created. Convicted women can interact with their children in their free time without restrictions. If a mother of a child who has reached the age of three has not served the remainder of her sentence, and it does not exceed 1 year, and she diligently performs her maternal duties, the child’s stay in the children’s home can be extended by the administration of the correctional colony until the mother is released.
The initiative of the charitable organisation ‘Chernihiv Women’s Human Rights Centre’ was supported by People’s Deputy of Ukraine H. V. Mankovskyi, the Chernihiv Public Committee for Human Rights Protection (Executive Director V. V. Tarasov), the Chernihiv Centre for Young Human Rights Activists (Director R. M. Shramov), private entrepreneur M. V. Artiukh, and media representatives.
Representatives of public and human rights organisations, assistants to the People’s Deputy, and entrepreneurs met with the mothers and their children. With the funds raised, yoghurt, biscuits, juice, nappies, and other necessary items for the babies were purchased, which were handed over to the head of the children’s home, O. I. Samovska.
Before the institution’s guests, the children performed a concert, and the convicted women prepared a puppet show for the children.
