South Ukrainian Correctional Colony (No. 83)
The State Institution “South Ukrainian Correctional Colony (No. 83)” is located in the town of Kostiantynivka, Voznesensk district, Mykolaiv region, and is one of the correctional facilities in Ukraine whose history is closely connected with the extraction and processing of natural stone.
The development of the institution took place in parallel with the exploration of the Kostiantynivka granite deposit and the creation of a powerful production base oriented towards the manufacture of building products. Over decades, convicts participated in work related to the extraction, processing, and transportation of granite, and the institution's enterprise became one of the leading manufacturers of granite products in the Ukrainian sentence execution system.
In the 1990s, the institution's enterprise specialised in the production of architectural and building products from granite extracted from two quarries of the Kostiantynivka deposit. In addition to stone processing, mechanical processing of parts, manufacturing of metal structures, and non-standard equipment for industrial enterprises were carried out.
An important stage of development was the reform of the criminal-executive system of Ukraine at the end of the 1990s. In accordance with the order of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine dated 14 November 1998 on the transfer of security functions for correctional facilities from the MIA internal troops to the State Department of Ukraine for the Execution of Sentences, the property and personnel of the internal troops units that provided its security were transferred to the institution.
By Order No. 165 of the State Department of Ukraine for the Execution of Sentences dated 29 November 1999, the institution was renamed South Ukrainian Correctional Colony (No. 83).
Based on the results of the accreditation conducted in 2003, the colony was classified as a medium-security institution for men sentenced for the first time to imprisonment for a fixed term. A social rehabilitation unit was created at the institution, as well as an enhanced control unit, in accordance with the requirements of the Criminal-Executive Code of Ukraine.
Today, the South Ukrainian Correctional Colony (No. 83) remains one of the leading production institutions of the Mykolaiv region’s penitentiary system. The main direction of the enterprise's activity is stone processing and the manufacture of products from granite of the Kostiantynivka deposit. The production base of the institution allows for a full cycle of natural stone processing and the manufacture of a wide range of building and architectural products.
Along with production activities, the institution carries out measures for social and educational work, vocational training, and re-socialisation of convicts, aimed at preparing them for return to society after serving their sentences.
Currently, the head of the institution is Oleksandr Volodymyrovych SADOVSKYI.
