The State Institution “Voznesensk Correctional Colony (No. 72)” is located in the city of Voznesensk, Mykolaiv region, and is one of the correctional facilities created on the basis of former medical-labour dispensaries during the period of reform of the criminal-executive system of Ukraine.

The history of the institution began on 25 May 1980, when a medical-labour dispensary was created for the compulsory treatment of persons suffering from chronic alcoholism. On 15 July 1980, by Decision No. 370 of the Voznesensk City Council of People's Deputies, a land plot was allocated for the needs of the institution to accommodate residential and production zones, as well as to organise the labour of persons held in the dispensary.

The institution's operations effectively began in January 1981. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the material and technical base was actively developed, production capacities were created, and cooperation agreements were concluded with industrial and agricultural enterprises of the Mykolaiv region. Production activity became an important element of the institution's functioning and the employment of persons held there.

In the process of reforming the penitentiary system of independent Ukraine, medical-labour dispensaries were liquidated. By Order No. 47 of the State Department of Ukraine for the Execution of Sentences dated 30 March 2000, the Voznesensk medical-labour dispensary was reconstructed and re-profiled into a reinforced-regime correctional labour colony.

At the end of 2000, work was completed on preparing the institution to perform its new functions. On 29 December 2000, a commission from the State Department of Ukraine for the Execution of Sentences inspected the institution regarding its readiness to receive convicts and organise security. On 10 April 2001, the first group of convicts sentenced to deprivation of liberty arrived at the colony.

According to the results of the accreditation conducted in 2003, the Voznesensk Correctional Colony (No. 72) was classified as a medium-security institution for men sentenced for the first time to imprisonment for a fixed term. The institution was also assigned a second level of compliance regarding equipment and conditions for holding convicts as per the requirements of the Criminal-Executive Code of Ukraine.

Throughout its operation, the colony has developed its production base, provided vocational training and employment for convicts, and carried out social and educational work aimed at their re-socialisation and preparation for return to society.

Today, the Voznesensk Correctional Colony (No. 72) continues to function as a medium-security institution within the structure of the State Penitentiary Service of Ukraine and the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine.

Currently, the head of the institution is Oleh Borysovych NEHRUTSA.
