Zaporizhzhia Pre-trial Detention Centre
Zaporizhzhia Pre-trial Detention Centre is one of the oldest penitentiary institutions in the Zaporizhzhia region. Its history dates back to the late 19th century, when a prison complex was created in what was then Oleksandrivsk (now Zaporizhzhia) for the detention of persons under investigation and those convicted. After the establishment of Soviet power, the facility continued to function as a place of pre-trial detention, and after the declaration of Ukraine’s independence, it became part of the State Criminal-Executive Service of Ukraine. The modern Zaporizhzhia Pre-trial Detention Centre performs functions related to the detention of persons for whom a preventive measure in the form of detention in custody has been chosen, as well as certain categories of convicts who remain in the institution to participate in investigative actions, court hearings, or are awaiting transfer to penal institutions.
The institution’s complex is located in the central part of the city of Zaporizhzhia and consists of high-security buildings, administrative, utility, and auxiliary premises. In various years, renovation and modernisation work was carried out on individual infrastructure facilities, yet a significant part of the buildings retains the characteristic architectural features of penitentiary institutions from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Following the start of the full-scale invasion by the Russian Federation in 2022, the Zaporizhzhia Pre-trial Detention Centre continued to operate under the control of Ukraine. Despite its proximity to the combat zone and regular shelling of the Zaporizhzhia region, the institution was not under occupation and continues to carry out its assigned tasks within the system of the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine. As of today, control over the institution by Ukraine has not been lost.
